The Attributes of God: Sovereignty

Have you ever eaten a cup of shredded cheese? How about 3-4 raw eggs? Uncooked bacon?

Probably not would be my guess. You may have eaten spinach or onions in their natural state, but all of these ingredients would taste much better together and cooked then served as an omelet rather than looking at them on their own.

This is a picture of God’s sovereignty in my life. Sovereignty is an attribute of God that is used to define God’s perfect control and management of the universe. God, in all of his infinite wisdom, will all power and control, takes the shredded cheese situations, raw egg circumstances, uncooked bacon mishaps and throws in some spinach and onions on occasion to create and shape His will for our lives. In order to trust God’s sovereignty, you have to believe it.

Do you have a proper understanding that God reserves and governs every detail? Every living thing He is consistently involved with, orchestrating them to act in a way that fulfills his divine purpose.

I can recall a time in my life where I had it all planned out…the type of career I would have, where I would live and what I would study in school. But by the age of 20 I found myself unemployed and no longer enrolled in school. In my own power and ability I was a failure…but in God’s power and ability He was using this time to shape me into the type of Christian He needed me to be. In God’s divine providence, He navigated me to a job in a field I had no experience in. At this job, which has become my career, I have made some invaluable relationships, including my husband of 7 years, and gained resources to minister to young women.

When God is in control of navigation, you can never be lost!

That is why Matthew 6:25-34 says --- “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Trusting in the wonderful attribute will give you peace. Peace is within your reach, not because of the absence of problems, but because there is a sovereign God.
